MELAKA, April 17 (Bernama) — The Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Tanjung Bidara state seat in Melaka, Datuk Ab Karim Sulaiman has withdrawn from contesting in the 13th general election, citing health reasons.
Ab Karim, 65, who was the state Public Works and Amenities Committee chairman, sent an official letter to Melaka BN chairman and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam around noon Wednesday on his withdrawal from contesting.
Following this, Mohd Ali when met at his official residence Seri Bendahara, here, announced that retired teacher Md Rawi Mahmud, 60, who is a Masjid Tanah Umno division committee member would replace Ab Karim after receiving approval from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“The letter of candidacy will be obtained this evening…he (Md Rawi) is known to the voters in Masjid Tanah,” he said.
Mohd Ali said Ab Karim, who was the Tanjung Bidara incumbent assemblyman for two terms and before that, the assemblyman man for Sungai Udang for one term, had never expressed his desire not to defend his Tanjung Bidara seat.
He said he knew that Ab Karim had health problems but thought he had recovered and could return to work to serve the people.
He described Ab Karim as a hardworking and dedicated elected representative, hence he was retained as the BN candidate for his constituency before withdrawing from the contest.
In the last general election, Ab Karim defeated PAS candidate Imran Abdul Halim with a 3,383-vote majority.
